Phobia involves irrational fear towards an object or situation. Common types of phobias include fear of crowds, closed spaces (claustrophobia), fear of scrutiny by other people (social phobia), abnormal anxiety about disease (hypochondriasis), dental procedures, heights, thunder, darkness, flying, blood, examination, using public toilets, animals, eating certain foods etc. Specific phobias usually arise in childhood or early adult life and can persist for decades if they remain untreated.
