Obsessive thoughts are ideas, images or impulses that enter the individual’s mind again and again in a stereotyped form. These thoughts are distressing and the sufferer often tries, unsuccessfully, to resist them. Compulsive acts are stereotyped behaviours that are repeated again and again. These behaviours are recognized by the individual as pointless and repeated attempts are made to resist it, in very long-standing cases, resistance may be minimal. The types of OCD include predominantly obsessive thoughts (for example, a woman may be tormented by a fear that she might eventually be unable to resist an impulse to kill the child she loves), predominantly compulsive acts (concerned with cleaning or hand washing, repeated checking or orderliness and tidiness) and mixed obsessive thoughts and acts (elements of both obsessive thinking and compulsive behaviour).
